Power of the Moon

by Deb Quantock McCarey

For me, September is the season of the moon.

That's why now as the sun sets I sit on my back porch; I'm watching all my moons rise.

In the early AM, I watch them set.

Am I talking about stargazing

No.  But I could.  What has been happening astronomically above us, lately has been absolutely astounding, especially for anyone with kids.

Instead, this is about me being another gardener going gaga over an aromatic, vigorous growing and oh-so-romantic flowering vine with big white blooms that only show themselves from dusk to dawn.

Ahhhh, the moonflower.

Mine are companion planted  with purple pole beans that proffer a pretty delicate flower and a delicious bean that becomes green when you cook it.  Along with that is co-mingled black cherry tomatoes, for their pick-and-eat attributes and ornamental flare.

Although, I have only harvested one set of beans.  The nightly production of moonflowers has been stealing the show.

They are absolutely dreamy.

My spouse caught one waking up the other evening.  It took 30 minutes.  Here it is in under a minute..
